'Starting Line': Farmers markets go through growing pains

As the weather begins warm, many of us find ourselves reaching for a spring jacket and heading outdoors.

One popular pastime this time of year is visiting a farmers market.

Shoppers can pick up fresh fruits, vegetables, and food products directly from local growers.

In 2009 the Minnesota Grown Directory had just 100 farmers markets listed.

Today there are 143 Minnesota farmers markets listed in the directory.

These venues for fresh food are growing in popularity, but not all had been governed by the same rules.

The differences in rules had caused some confusion for shoppers and sellers alike.

This week's Starting Line explains why this confusion is no longer an issue.
