<i>Starting Line:</i> Should parents know what surveys their children take in school?
This week’s Starting Line looks at a policy bill designed to give parents and guardians more control over what surveys their children or dependents take in school.
Under HF464, a school district would need to get written consent from a parent or guardian of a minor or dependent child before administering a student survey or similar instrument that solicits information about the student or the student's family.
School districts would need parental or guardian consent on surveys that cover, but are not limited to, political affiliations or beliefs; mental or psychological problems; sexual behavior or attitudes; illegal, antisocial, self-incriminating or demeaning behavior; and religious practices, affiliations or beliefs.
Rep. Mary Liz Holberg (R-Lakeville) is sponsoring the bill.
Holberg, a parent herself, said the idea for the bill came from a personal experience.
