Plan to streamline prescription refills going to governor

A 90-day refill of a prescription drug could become easier to obtain under certain circumstances.

Sponsored by Rep. Roz Peterson (R-Lakeville) and Sen. Julie Rosen (R-Vernon Center), HF2512/SF2548* would allow a pharmacist to issue up to a 90-day supply to a patient who already completed an initial 30-day supply of a prescription drug. Currently, the pharmacist must have the supply authorized by the physician who issued the prescription.

The bill was passed 129-0 by the House Friday. Passed 61-0 by the Senate May 3, the bill now heads to the governor.

Peterson said families going on vacation and individuals in similar situations often seek this option. She said the change would save time for patients and physicians.

The additional supply would be based on the pharmacist’s best judgment and could not exceed the total quantity of remaining refills in the prescription nor the limit on the number of dosages specified in the prescription.

The option would not be applicable to any prescription that is a controlled substance.
