Mental health, chemical dependency would be tested at the same time

Mental health and chemical dependency disorders would both be tested when medical staff perform assessments, under a bill passed 127-0 by the House Monday.

Sponsored by Rep. Tony Albright (R-Prior Lake) and Sen. Jeff Hayden (DFL-Mpls), HF2901/SF2498* is headed to the governor. It was passed 60-0 by the Senate April 25.

The bill would make technical changes so that medical staff who perform mental health assessments would need to screen for co-occurring chemical dependency issues and staff who perform chemical dependency assessments would check for co-occurring mental health issues.

Albright said the bill has strong support from all parties involved and has been sought for several years.
