Elk River utilities commission could get more members

The City of Elk River may increase the size of its utilities commission from three to five members under provisions of a bill passed by the House 125-1 Tuesday.

Sponsored by Rep. Nick Zerwas (R-Elk River), HF2718 would also permit the city to increase the number of utilities commission members who may also serve as city council members from one to two.

Zerwas said the other appointee would be an at-large citizen from the utilities coverage area and that the service area covered by the commission would be expanding by 20 percent.

“We’re looking for a little bit more oversight and a five-member board,” Zerwas said.

The proposed changes would be effective upon local approval.

The bill now heads to the Senate where Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer (R-Big Lake) is the sponsor.
