House passes bill to improve heart attack response time

For someone suffering from a severe heart attack, a few minutes longer in emergency response time could be the difference between life and death.

HF2613, passed 131-0 by the House Monday, aims to improve those chances by streamlining the response system for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions, or severe heart attacks caused by blockage of a coronary artery.

The bill would allow hospitals to be voluntarily designated as a STEMI receiving center, making them a go-to hospital for those type of patients. It would also require regional and local EMS programs to develop STEMI heart attack transportation protocols.

Rep. Roz Peterson (R-Lakeville), the bill sponsor, said it is the first step toward building a system to help heart attack victims across Minnesota.

“When someone has a STEMI, time is critical,” Peterson said. “(The system) is a coordinated and standardized approach to speed up all parts of their medical care.”

The bill now goes to the Senate, where Sen. Melissa Wiklund (DFL-Bloomington) is the sponsor.
