Divorce certificates would be automatic

Divorcing couples would receive a simple certificate, as they did when they married, under a bill the House passed 128-0 Wednesday.

Sponsor Rep. John Persell (DFL-Bemidji) said he had HF1357 drafted “to right a wrong” after a constituent told him her lengthy divorce decree complicated the process of changing her name with government agencies and other organizations.

Another advantage of a divorce certificate, said Persell: greater privacy. The judgment and decree documents typically issued in a divorce can contain personal data — including Social Security numbers and information about children and assets — that go far beyond what’s needed for making simple name changes in government and business records.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where Senate President Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) is the sponsor.
