The Final Weeks of Session

Friday, April 30, 2021

Rep. Christensen

Dear Neighbors,

We’ve passed all of our budget proposals off the House floor, and the next step in finalizing Minnesota’s budget for the next two years are conference committees. These committees are made up of House and Senate members, who work to craft consensus legislation between the two different budget proposals from each chamber.

I’m honored and excited to share that I was appointed to serve on the Higher Education Conference Committee. We have a duty to deliver quality, affordable, and responsive higher education to the students who seek knowledge at our exceptional colleges and universities. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to craft a bill that, while it may look different from what we passed in the House, stays true to that duty to Minnesotans. I’m confident we can come together to support a comprehensive, world-renowned higher education system that can help Minnesota bounce back from this pandemic.

Our Higher Education budget, like most of our budget proposals, is very different from the Senate’s. Being one of the only divided state legislatures in the nation, it’s up to us to show that good governance can still come from compromise, and I look forward to doing my part in advocating for the budget Minnesotans deserve.

REAL ID

In a recent announcement from the Federal Government, the deadline to obtain a REAL ID has been extended to May 3, 2023. This will help relieve some of the pressure on our local Driver and Vehicle Services offices, which have been overwhelmed with requests to renew expired drivers licenses and vehicle registration tabs, and give Minnesotans more time to obtain this updated form of identification.

REAL ID

Beginning May 3, 2023, Minnesotans will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. An enhanced driver's license or ID card, passport or passport card are acceptable substitutes.

The 2020 Census

Thank you to everyone that helped put Minnesota over the edge in the 2020 Census. Because of your efforts, we were able to keep all eight of Minnesota’s congressional seats. Not only did Minnesota lead the nation in self-responses, but Stillwater and the surrounding communities even beat Minnesota’s average with a self-response rate of 82.2%

In addition to proper representation, an accurate census also better ensures our state and community gets the investments and resources we deserve. You can read more about Minnesota’s impressive and narrow census victory here
