Legislative Update - February 27, 2019

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan have introduced their “Budget for One Minnesota” proposal, and more recently their bonding proposal. The budget focuses on a great education for all students, more affordable and accessible health care options, and strong, prosperous communities across the state. I appreciate that Governor Walz recognizes how deeply Minnesotans value all of this. I also welcome the Governor’s bonding proposal to invest in the Stillwater Correctional Facility.

To be clear, this is a starting point and I’m going to take a moment to review all the details, but this will give us an excellent opportunity to build “One Minnesota.”

Listening Session Rescheduled

Due to a recently scheduled and critically important gun safety committee meeting, I will be rescheduling my Listening Session with Majority Leader Winkler that was supposed to take place tonight. Instead, the Listening Session will now be on Saturday, March 16th, at 10:30am. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope to see you there.

What: Listening Session with Special Guest Majority Leader Winkler

When: Saturday, March 16, 10:30am – 12pm

Where: Stillwater Public Library
              224 3rd St N
              Stillwater, MN 55082

Stillwater Correctional Facility

As part of our efforts to ensure our correctional facilities are safe for employees, surrounding communities, and the incarcerated, our House Corrections Division took the historical step of holding the first ever committee hearing inside of one. It was good to hear from facility leadership, including Warden Eddie Miles, staff, and those who have been incarcerated. Hearing from these perspectives will help in the deliberation over how we can improve these facilities.

Corrections Officer Joseph Gomm was never far from my mind during that hearing, and I’m proud to co-sponsor the bill to rename a segment of Highway 95 in his honor.

Energy Conservation in Schools

Smart and practical energy solutions need to be the way of the future, and it’s been a goal of mine to carry legislation that’ll help create these solutions in our communities. One bill of mine, HF 1148, recently passed unanimously through the Energy and Climate Committee. If it becomes law, it would establish a loan fund to help Minnesota schools invest in energy conservation programs. This will help schools reduce their long-term energy use, saving both money and the planet!

Stay In Touch

Speaking of schools, thank you to the familiar faces from Stillwater Schools who came to visit me last week. This group was at the Capitol advocating for strong public education, something I endorse wholeheartedly! I’m always happy to meet with my constituents, and I hope you reach out to me will any questions or comments on the legislative process. You can always reach me at (651) 296-4244, or rep.shelly.christensen@house.mn. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Shelly Christensen
