SAINT PAUL, MN –State Rep. Ilhan Omar released the following statement after the announcement by the University of Minnesota that it will close the on-campus child care center after 45 years:
“During the last year I’ve focused a significant portion of my work on the House Higher Education Committee on making a college degree accessible to student parents who are trying to lift up their families through education. This is a huge setback for them, and I’m extremely disappointed in the University’s decision. I will be asking Chair Nornes to hold hearings on this issue so that we can get more information on the decision and find solutions to ensure that all University of Minnesota students, faculty and staff have access to affordable, quality child care.”
Minnesota State Representative Ilhan Omar (DFL-Minneapolis) is the first Somali-American to be elected to a state legislature in the United States of America.
