Ramadan Mubarak

Thursday, May 17, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

This is the first day of Ramadan, a very special time for many members of our community. Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends. This meal is called an iftar.

Fasting is intended to bring the faithful closer to God and remind them of those less fortunate. During the day, Muslims must abstain from eating, drinking, and are encouraged to focus on meditative acts like prayer, reading the Quran and charity.

Tomorrow, interfaith partners are hosting the annual Unity Iftar at Gandhi Mahal in Minneapolis. People of all faiths are invited to break bread with your Muslim brothers and sisters and enjoy conversation, connection, and festive celebration. You can find out more on the event page here.

Ramadan Mubarak – which means ‘Have a blessed Ramadan’ – to all of you. During this month, mosques across the state will host free iftars. Non-Muslims are encouraged to attend. A Minnesota Council of Churches program is coordinating these community events throughout the month.
