Friday, May 5, 2017

Hello from the Capitol!

Last Friday, House and Senate leadership released joint budget targets focused on funding education and transportation infrastructure, as well as prioritizing middle class tax relief.

The Legislature is ahead of schedule of where it was two years ago in regards to finalizing the state’s budget. This year, we have been focused on finishing the legislative session on time and not working into the final hours. I am optimistic that Governor Dayton shares this goal as well.

Freeway Landfill:

This week, I was busy meeting with Senator Hall, the two chairs of the environmental committees in the House and Senate, and other stakeholders in order to work on the language that addresses the issues of the Freeway Landfill in the environment omnibus bill. Our goal is to indemnify hundreds of businesses, local governments, schools, and others who (many) had previously settled claims with the state in regards to waste disposal at the Freeway Landfill between 1960 &1990, which have been identified through the EPA process. The conference committee added stronger language to help address cleanup of the landfill should an agreement between the owner of the Freeway Landfill and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency be further delayed. We are hopeful that the Governor also views this legislation as a priority for this session.
