Neighbors and Friends,

The winter cold has set in and I hope you are well and able to stay inside and keep warm during our deep-freeze. Here is some news from the Capitol this week:

Housing Committee Hears Rental Assistance Measure

This week, the House Housing Finance and Policy Committee, which I chair, held a remote hearing to discuss House File 40, which would establish a state rent assistance program for low-income households. HF 40 is authored by Rep. Michael Howard (DFL - Richfield), the committee’s vice chair. We heard compelling testimony from those affected by the housing crunch and those advocating for funding. The pandemic has accelerated the housing crisis and it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to lessen the disaster families across the state are facing.

You can view documents from the hearing on the committee’s webpage and view the hearing on Minnesota House Public Information Services’ YouTube channel.

Legalizing Cannabis

Several of my House colleagues have introduced a plan, that I also support, to responsibly legalize adult-use cannabis in Minnesota. The legislation creates a regulated cannabis market while addressing legitimate concerns around youth access, public health, and road safety.

Opposing Enbridge Line 3

I signed on to a recent ad in the Star Tribune, asking decision makers to oppose the Enbridge Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline.
