Legislative Update - April 4, 2019

Thursday, April 4, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

With 6 weeks remaining in the legislative session, the House is beginning to roll out omnibus budget bills. Committees are meeting all day and into the evening this week to wrap up finance bills and send them to the House floor for a vote. Other news from the Capitol:

State of the State address

Governor Walz delivered his State of the State address last night to a House chamber filled with legislators and honored guests. The governor’s speech reflected the One Minnesota theme of caring for one another, long term budget solutions and a sense of all being in this together. My guest for the address was Taylor Diles, a University of Minnesota Humphrey School master’s program student who is also my mentee this legislative session.

Budget bills unveiled

This week, the House Majority unveiled several budget bills, including transportation, health and human services, higher education and judiciary finance/civil law.

I chair the Housing Policy & Finance Division and this week in committee, we rolled out our final version of the bill. The measure is now headed to Ways & Means and then to the House floor. The needs in this area are significant and our work is not done.

Renter’s / Homestead Property Tax Refund Filing

If you are a renter, you may qualify for the Renter’s Property Tax Refund. You have until Monday, August 15 to file, but it is generally a good idea to file when you do your taxes. Go to this link for information on how to file.

The Homestead Credit Refund for homeowners also has a filing deadline of August 15. Check this link for more information.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is offering some helpful tips ahead of the April 15 filing deadline. Go here for more information.

Visitors to the Capitol

The Coalition of Asian-American Leaders visited my office this week,

Also, several retired educators stopped by. It is interesting to meet with former teachers who are still very engaged in the impact education funding has on learners of all ages.
