RELEASE: Rep. Donald Raleigh Introduces Bill to Provide Tax Credits for Hiring Veterans

Wednesday, February 3, 2021

ST. PAUL —State Representative Donald Raleigh, R-Circle Pines, introduced legislation this week that would provide tax credits to employers for hiring disabled or unemployed veterans.

“Having served nearly eight years active duty in the United States Army, I understand the unique challenges that face our servicemen and women when they reenter civilian life—a process made more difficult if the veteran is disabled as a result of their service,” said Rep. Raleigh. “Providing this incentive for employers is the right thing to do for the brave men, women, and their families that have sacrificed for our state and nation. Gainful employment not only offers income for an individual and family, but it can also provide a sense of pride and purpose that goes far beyond a paycheck.”

Raleigh’s bill, House File 641, provides up to a $3,000 tax credit for employers that hire a disabled veteran and up to a $1,500 credit for employers that hire an unemployed veteran. Employers may not claim the credit if they hire a veteran that has previously been employed by the business.

The bill has been referred to the Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee.
