RELEASE: Igo, House Republicans Send Letter to President Biden Urging Energy Independence

Wednesday, March 2, 2022

St. Paul, MN— State Representative Spencer Igo, R-Grand Rapids, and a group of lawmakers sent a letter to President Biden on Wednesday urging the president to commit to pursuing American energy independence in light of recent geopolitical events.

“Relying on hostile nations like Russia for the important commodities that power our national economy is a strategic mistake that leaves America and the free world vulnerable to the whims of autocratic dictators like Vladimir Putin,” said Rep. Igo. “This letter reaffirms our commitment to keeping America safe and making sure that the American economy continues to move forward.”

In addition to urging energy independence, lawmakers also called on the Biden Administration to reconsider its decision to cancel mineral leases in Minnesota.

Igo continued, “The world is an unpredictable place, and it is important for America to source the critical minerals and precious metals needed to produce important technology like cellphones, batteries, and microchips in Minnesota. We can produce them right here in Northern Minnesota and it’s time for America to invest in the communities and industries of the Northland.”

Igo organized and authored the letter. Sixteen other members of the Minnesota House of Representatives joined Rep. Igo as co-authors on the letter.

A copy of the letter can be found here.
