RELEASE: Rep. Novotny Statement on Mary Moriarty Requesting Outside Legal Counsel

Friday, April 26, 2024

St. Paul, MN—State Representative Paul Novotny, R-Elk River, issued the following statement today reacting to news that Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty has requested the authority to hire outside legal counsel at a time when the lead prosecutor in the Trooper Londregan case has reportedly removed himself from the case.

In a statement, Moriarity’s office said it is "assembling a new prosecution team to handle what is an extraordinarily resource intensive case…”

“By implying that this is a ‘complicated’ case, Mary Moriarty is once again revealing that she cannot separate her own political motivations from her duty as the Hennepin County Attorney to prosecute crimes without bias,” said Novotny. “This case is not complicated because all the facts are already known. There are two bodycam videos, two dashcam videos, and audio that accompanies each. Combined together, we have complete audio and visual documentation of what happened during the incident.

“This case has been mishandled from the very beginning and it’s time for Mary Moriarty to finally do the right thing, step aside, and allow the case to be reassigned to someone that will do the job ethically.”
