House Passes Rep. Bierman’s Accident Prevention Course Legislation
St. Paul, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the House Transportation Committiee’s package of policy proposals, House File 3436, which included Rep. Robert Bierman’s (DFL - Apple Valley) legislation to codify rules for accident prevention courses that provide for an auto insurance premium reduction.
“This bill aims to improve driver safety for those of us 55 and over,” Rep. Bierman said. “With traffic deaths on the rise for older Minnesotans, one way to keep older drivers on the road safely is to maintain their driving skills through education.”
Rep. Bierman’s legislation, which was first introduced as House File 4587, would codify the rules governing driver safety courses to reduce the length of a first-time course from 8 hours to 4 hours to be eligible for Minnesota’s auto insurance discount, without compromising the quality of the content. Drivers will still be required to take the 4-hour refresher course within 3 years to continue to qualify for the discount.
The legislation, as part of the larger Transportation policy package, builds on last year’s historic budget that capitalized on state and federal funds to deliver a generational investment in transportation and promote safety across our state.
