Capitol Grand Opening Weekend

Thursday, August 10, 2017

Friends,

This Friday August 11th to Sunday August 13th is the Minnesota State Capitol Grand Opening Celebration. The event is a celebration of the completion of a four year restoration and renovation of Minnesota’s historic State Capitol building. First built in 1905, our Capitol was in need of significant repair and restoration. Over the last few years the "People's House" underwent a $310 million restoration, with the finishing touches happening this summer. Click here to see my video inviting everyone to the Capitol Grand Opening and to see a small portion of our beautifully restored Capitol.

Events over the weekend include a ribbon cutting, tours, hotdish panels, live performances, a kid zone, fireworks, an ice cream social, a craft beer garden, and much more. Full information on the schedule, ticketed events, transportation, and Capitol renovations can be found at mn.gov/admin/capitol-grand-opening.

Hope to see you there!

Night to Unite

It was great to travel with our local police and other elected officials to a number of the Night to Unite events across our community. It's wonderful to see so many gather together to celebrate our community.

On this day in History

The Smithsonian Institution was created on August 10th, 1829 when President James K. Polk signed the Smithsonian Institution Act into law. The Smithsonian is named after James Smithson who left his estate to “the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”

Today the Smithsonian totals 19 museums and galleries. You can read more of the unique history on how the Smithsonian came to be here
