Letter: New Republican legislator looks back on first month

Sunday, January 29, 2017

I am honored to be elected to serve the communities of Inver Grove Heights, Sunfish Lake, and parts of Mendota Heights and Eagan. During the first three weeks of session I have been hard at work to deliver on our shared priorities.

We’ve made significant progress on a number of key issues facing Minnesota, specifically focusing on tax relief and health care insurance premium relief.

On the first day possible, the House unanimously passed a tax relief bill that was then passed by the Senate and signed by Governor Dayton.

The bill brings Minnesota’s tax laws into conformity with federal tax laws, bringing $21.7 million in tax relief to 220,000 people. On top of the relief, quick passage of this bill avoids complications and hassles with filing software.

We’ve also made significant progress to deliver premium relief to thousands by passing the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill. This proposal includes $285 million in premium relief for those who need it most and $15 million for continuity-of-care to ensure those who are currently receiving life-saving treatment will not lose access to their doctors.

The plan backed by my Republican colleagues includes many much needed reforms that we believe will help you and your family have more and better choices for health care plans in the future. I will be working hard towards finding long-term solutions to make health care affordable.

I welcome your input on the biggest challenges our community faces and how best we can solve them. Please email (rep.regina.barr@house.mn) or call (651-296-4192) any time.

Rep. Regina Barr,

House District 52B
