Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update from the Capitol.

Real ID

On Thursday, the House passed legislation that is a priority for millions of Minnesotans who travel by plane or need to ender federal facilities. House File 3, the Real ID compliance bill, will allow our state to comply with federal mandates and ensure that Minnesotans can continue to fly without undue burden. The original legislation was passed by Congress in 2005 to make it more difficult for terrorists to obtain a fake ID card.

Without the passage of this law, starting in January 2018, a Minnesota-issued driver’s license will no longer be a valid form of identification to fly domestically. If signed into law, the federal government will give us until 2020 to fully implement federal Real ID mandates.

Furthermore, for those concerned about opting into federally mandated requirements, this legislation provides a two-track system so Minnesotans can choose whether or not to get a Real ID-compliant license.

Minnesotans deserve peace-of-mind when flying, and this legislation will ensure that people can continue to fly domestically with their state-issued identification. I will keep you updated on the bill’s progress this session.

Sunday Sales

This week, the House passed legislation to legalize the sale of alcohol on Sundays on a vote of 85-45. This marks the first time in state history that this was passed as standalone legislation.

The repeal of this sales ban, which has been in place since statehood, has been something many Minnesotans have advocated for over the past several decades. Like other Minnesota businesses, liquor stores should have the option to be open every day of the week, and consumers are asking for additional choice and convenience.

If this measure can also pass a full Senate vote, Governor Dayton has indicated he will sign the bill into law.
