Legislative Update - February 26, 2019

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Dear neighbors,

The fast-paced action continues at the Capitol. Last week began with the first ever Sovereignty Day at the Capitol on Monday and the Governor’s budget recommendations on Tuesday.

Sovereignty Day

Last Monday was a historic day at the legislature. Leaders from all eleven of Minnesota’s tribal nations came to the Capitol for an all-day floor session centered on history, culture, and public policy. I appreciated the opportunity to learn how the state and tribal governments can work together more effectively for the benefit of our whole state.

You can watch the presentations here.

Budget for One Minnesota

Last Tuesday Governor Tim Walz announced his budget recommendations for the next two years. One important issue that the governor highlights is the adoption of new consumer protections for those in nursing homes and assisted living. Governor Walz proposes creating a licensing system for assisted living centers and conducting more inspections of care facilities. We must do more to protect our seniors and ensure that they’re receiving the best care. I have been actively working to improve long term care, so I support this proposal.

You can watch Governor Walz’s speech and read more about the budget at mn.gov/governor/budget. The governor’s proposal is the first step in a longer process. In the coming weeks, House members will review all of the details of the state budget and listen closely to Minnesotans. Your feedback is a vital part of creating a budget that works for all Minnesotans. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to deliver a budget that will ensure a strong economic future for our state.

Protecting Minnesota Voters

The House passed HF 14, a bill to allow Minnesota to access federal funds to make sure that our statewide voter registration system is strong and secure. These funds were made available by the federal government in response to attempted election interference by foreign powers identified by the Department of Homeland Security. Minnesota is the ONLY STATE that has not had legislative action to release the funds.

Eagan Robotics

I was able to see some talented students participate in the Week Zero Robotics Competition at Eagan High School. This program is a fun way for kids to learn valuable skills and be a part of a team. It also includes career exploration. At this competition, there was a forum specifically geared towards women in STEM that included panelists from a variety of Eagan businesses. The students also shared a bill proposition for funding STEM education. Congratulations to these high schoolers on a great competition.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns. It’s an honor to be a voice for our community.

Sincerely,

Laurie Halverson
State Representative
