Legislative Update from Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen

Friday, April 1, 2022

Dear Neighbors,

Last night, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved legislation that reauthorizes a program that has been in place since 2017 that makes sure that health care premiums on the individual market remain affordable for Minnesotans.

Back in 2017, the individual market was on life support as Obamacare had wreaked havoc causing premiums to skyrocket and choices for consumers to plummet.

The 2017 plan quite literally saved the individual market here in Minnesota.

Before Obamacare, Minnesota had a nation-leading safety net to ensure Minnesotans with the greatest medical needs were taken care of by mitigating the impact of high-risk individuals on the individual market.

While the current program in place isn’t necessarily perfect, it nevertheless serves an important role in helping keep premiums on the individual market affordable. Remember, without this bill, Minnesotans would be seeing double-digit increases in their premiums.

Additionally, I was pleased that a provision that was included in the House Democrat version of the bill that would have brought Minnesota closer to embracing socialized medicine in our state was removed during conference committee. Therefore, that provision will not become law.

This is good news for Minnesotans, and I will always stand strong against any moves to bring socialized, government-run health care to Minnesota.
