Legislative Update: March 11, 2024

Monday, March 11, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Maplewood town hall last Thursday night. We discussed priorities for this session, specific issue areas, and how we can work together to accomplish our goals of making Minnesota the best state to live, work, and raise a family.

Here’s an update from Saint Paul.

Budget Forecast Released

Recently, the Office of Minnesota Management and Budget released the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 biennium, projected to end with a $3.7 billion surplus, which is $1.3 billion more than the projections in November of 2023. We are in a strong position to weather unforeseen challenges that may come our way down the road.

Our economic outlook is a testament to the strength and resiliency of the people of Minnesota. We owe it to Minnesotans to continue managing our state’s finances in an effective, responsible manner while being responsive to challenges facing people and communities across the state.

Property Tax Refund

With tax season underway, DFLers worked diligently to ensure Minnesota families have access to the tax credits and deductions they've earned, strengthening their financial foundation. We worked to simplify the Property Tax Refund, making sure every renter will receive the refund they deserve, one-third of whom are seniors or people with disabilities.

You can qualify for the $204 average refund by visiting www.revenue.state.mn.us/property-tax-refund.

House Approves 101 Environmental Projects

Minnesotans take pride in our legacy of environmental stewardship. That’s why we passed legislation to fund 101 projects across our state that protect our wildlife, water, air, and soil.

ENRTF

The funding, which comes from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, uses a portion of our state lottery proceeds to ensure our environment and natural resources are protected for generations to come.

EMT Training/Paramedic Scholarships Available

My colleagues and I are working to address the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) statewide shortage. One of these initiatives, which I supported, funds a one-time appropriation of $3 million for up to 600 scholarships of $5,000 starting in the fall of 2024 to be awarded by June 30, 2026. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this opportunity to serve the public and give back to the community, you can find eligibility information here
