Rep. Radinovich Supporting Marriage Equality

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

To the editor:

I didn’t come to the legislature expecting that all of the decisions I would be asked to make would be easy. Indeed, none has been more difficult than the issue of marriage currently being debated not just in Minnesota, but across the country. Constituents have heartfelt beliefs that are long-held, dear to them, and valid. Many of them on both sides of this bipartisan issue have contacted me and I want to be clear and upfront about how I’m voting and why.

I believe that all loving and committed couples should have the freedom to marry in Minnesota. I’m voting “Yes” on marriage equality. I’m voting “Yes” for freedom and equality — two principles our country was founded upon. During the process, I’ve worked to ensure that this bill only affects civil marriage and that any religious institutions will not be forced to go against their beliefs.

Throughout my life, I’ve been blessed to know many gay men and women from our area. I’ve never considered them less equal or less deserving of the same freedoms I enjoy, and I can’t turn my back on them. I’m voting my conscience and to vote otherwise would go against my values.

While some may disagree with my position, I believe that voting for marriage equality will bring us closer to fulfilling the great American promise that all are created equal. Support for extending marriage equality has growing bipartisan support across this state and nation as more Americans understand that freedom does indeed mean freedom for everyone.

Constituents on both sides of the aisle have had respectful conversations on this issue and I hope that continues. I am always willing to respectfully discuss my decision with any constituents who are interested.

Sincerely,

Joe Radinovich

State Representative
