Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition Honors Representative John Ward for Leadership on Tourism Issues

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

DULUTH, Minn., (February 4, 2014) – The Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition today recognized Representative John Ward (DFL, Baxter) with the “Tourism Leadership Award.”

The Minnesota Legislature significantly increased tourism funding last session by boosting the Explore Minnesota Tourism budget by 66 percent.  After years of declining funding, Explore Minnesota Tourism is poised to reach more markets and draw more visitors to all parts of the state.

“I’m incredibly honored by this award,” said Rep. Ward. “Tourism is invaluable in our area and affects so many either directly or indirectly. The growth and prosperity of our tourism industry helps create jobs and appreciation for the natural beauty of our region.”

Doug Killian, Chair of the Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition stated, “Representative Ward has been a tireless supporter of tourism for many years.  His leadership in the Minnesota House is greatly appreciated and we applaud his work.”

Tourism in the state of Minnesota is a $12.5 billion industry, supporting 245,400 leisure and hospitality jobs which represent 11% of total private sector employment.  Tourism generates nearly $811 million in state sales tax revenues, which is 17 percent of Minnesota’s sales tax revenues.  In addition, every $1 invested in state tourism marketing returns an estimated $8 in state and local taxes and $84 in spending by travelers. *

“The state’s investment in tourism funding will allow Minnesota to stay competitive, attract more out-of-state visitors and grow Minnesota’s tourism business,” Doug Killian.
