Rep. John Ward Encourages Area Students to Apply for Minnesota House of Representatives Page Program

Friday, September 13, 2013

St. Paul, Minnesota — State Representative John Ward (DFL – Baxter) is pleased to announce that the application process for the Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program is now underway. The page program is open to high school juniors in public or private schools. Accepted applicants will spend a week at the State Capitol in St. Paul and participate in a wide variety of experiences, designed to provide them with a deep understanding of our state government. Rep. Ward sent additional information to Brainerd and Pequot Lakes High Schools.

“The Minnesota House Page Program is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in state government,” said Rep. Ward. “Very few programs offer as meaningful an opportunity to see state government in action and gain important hands-on experience. I strongly encourage students in our area to apply.”

Among the many highlights included in each student's week at the Capitol are individual meetings with legislators designed to allow students to discuss the issues that matter most to them, experiencing the legislative process firsthand by assisting members during legislative session, participating in a mock committee session designed to develop students' leadership skills and to inspire them to think critically about the issues confronting our state, and providing students with the opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists, and members of the media.

Students should expect to participate in scheduled program activities from 8:00am to 5:30pm Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00am to 12:00pm on Friday.

Students interested in applying can visit the House Page Program website at http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/edprog/introletter.asp for more information and application materials. Applications must be postmarked by November 23, 2013. Program participants will receive a small stipend to help defray costs.
