St. Paul, MinnesotaState Representative John Ward (DFL – Baxter) is joining with Governor Mark Dayton, the Minnesota Twins, and the Minnesota Department of Commerce to encourage area students to participate in the annual Financial Literacy Essay Contest.

The contest is open to all Minnesota students in grades 3-5. The students are invited to submit a 300 word essay in response to the question, “If you were 100 years old, what three things would you tell your grandchildren to do to make smart financial decisions for their future?”

“Learning more about finances and making informed decisions can be the difference between a struggling family and a thriving one,” said Rep. Ward. “I wholeheartedly encourage students to participate in this essay contest and learn more about this important issue.”

The winner will receive four free tickets to a Minnesota Twins game at Target Field, baseball memorabilia signed by Twins players, and will be recognized on the big screen during the baseball game.

Responses are due by Tuesday, April 30. Essays should be sent to Julia Miller at julia.miller@state.mn.us or by mail to Julia Miller, Minnesota Department of Commerce, 85 Seventh Place East, Suite 500, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55101.
