Assistant Majority Leader Rep. John Ward Sworn-In as Legislative Session Starts

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

(ST. PAUL) — Today, State Representative and Assistant Majority Leader John Ward (DFL – Baxter) was officially sworn in as the state representative for District 10A, representing Brainerd, and the Pequot Lakes area. The 88th Legislature convened today at noon at the State Capitol. Rep. Ward was first elected in 2006 and is now serving his fourth term. Rep. Ward also delivered a speech seconding the nomination of Rep. Paul Thissen to serve as Speaker of the House.

In December, Rep. Ward was elected by his caucus to serve as an assistant majority leader, and was also selected to serve as the Vice Chair of the House Capital Investment Committee, and as a member on the Jobs and Economic Development Policy and Finance, Legacy, Public Safety Finance and Policy, and Rules and Legislative Administration Committees.

“We’ve got a lot to get done over the next several months, but we’re all more than ready to get to work,” said Rep. Ward. “I’m pleased and honored to serve on these important committees and as an assistant majority leader. Most importantly though, I’m thrilled to be back at the Capitol working on behalf of the people of District 10A.”

Minnesota is facing a $1.1 billion structural budget deficit, which balloons to over $2 billion when inflation is included. The state also still owes its K-12 schools another $1.1 billion.

“I think we’ve all had enough of the budget gimmicks and games,” said Rep. Ward. “The people of Minnesota expect us to work together and balance the budget honestly and responsibly. We have to decide what we value and prioritize as Minnesotans, and then put together a budget that funds those priorities and positions our great state for long-term economic growth.”

Throughout his legislative career Rep. Ward has frequently worked across the aisle, a trend he intends to continue this session.

“I’ve been proud of my bipartisan work over the last few years and I will continue to be willing to work with anyone, Democrat or Republican, who truly wants to find solutions to the challenges we face,” added Rep. Ward. “Neither party has a monopoly on great ideas and we’re going to need to work together if we want Minnesota to succeed.”

As always, Rep. Ward encourages constituents to contact him with any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas on any legislative topic. Rep. Ward can be reached by phone at 651-296-4333 or by email at rep.john.ward@house.mn.
