REP. FRITZ STATEMENT ON HEALTH INSURANCE EXCHANGE BILL

Monday, March 4, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN – The Health Insurance Exchange bill, HF 5, is up for a vote on the House floor.  The exchange is an online marketplace where Minnesotans will be able to compare and purchase insurance.  If Minnesota fails to pass this legislation by March 31, the Federal government will step in and establish a one-size-fits-all exchange.

State Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) released the following statement:

“The Health Insurance Exchange will allow Minnesota to once again lead the nation in healthcare.  By setting up our own exchange, Minnesota has the ability to create a more efficient and cost-effective system compared to the one-size-fits-all Federal model.

“The new exchange will help uninsured Minnesotans and small business employees to gain coverage, and will reduce the costs of purchasing insurance.  I am supportive of these efforts to expand health coverage and to bring costs down for working families in Greater Minnesota.  The end result of this effort will be healthier families and a healthier Minnesota.”

Minnesota families are expected to save over $1 billion by using the exchange, and 300,000 uninsured Minnesotans are projected to gain coverage through the exchange by 2016.
