STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR DAYTON’S BUDGET PROPOSAL

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, Governor Dayton released his 2013-2014 budget proposal.  The state is facing a $1.1 billion budget shortfall and owes our schools an additional $1.1 billion.  The governor’s budget aims to structurally balance the budget, reform state tax code and make investments in K-12 and higher education.

The proposal provides a property tax rebate of up to $500 for Minnesota homeowners, invests in Local Government and County Program Aid, increases K-12 funding by $52 per student and invests $80 million in the Minnesota State Grant Program, helping an additional 5,000 Minnesotans to receive a college education

State Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) released the following statement:

“I am very pleased with the property tax relief and local government aid proposals.  Rural Minnesotans have been hit hard with rising property taxes and I am very supportive of measures to reduce local property tax burdens on homeowners.

“After a decade of cuts to education I am glad to hear the Governor’s proposal makes investments in our schools.  Minnesota has always been a leader in education and our children and grandchildren need the proper resources to be successful in today’s economy.

“I am waiting to learn more details about the budget proposal but believe that we can work out a plan with Governor Dayton that responsibly addresses our budget deficit and follows through on strengthening our schools, nursing homes and rural community.  I welcome your input as we work to close the budget gap and improve our state.”
