The chair of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee will not be seeking re-election to the House in November.

In a series of tweets Monday, Rep. Rena Moran (DFL-St. Paul) announced: “I am running to be the next Ramsey County Commissioner for District 4 and am seeking the DFL endorsement!”

That seat became available when Toni Carter said she was not seeking re-election.

Now in her sixth term, Moran is the first person of color to chair the House Ways and Means Committee that has major say in shaping the state budget.

Moran served on health and human services committees and divisions throughout her term, including chairing the House Health and Human Services Policy Committee in 2019-20. She was an original member of the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus and currently chairs the United Black Legislative Caucus.

“To the people of District 65A, it has been an honor to represent you at the MN State House. Every day, I’ve approached my work with this mindset to remove barriers, eliminate inequities, & create new opportunities for everyone. I look forward to serving you at the County,” she tweeted.
