RELEASE: Rep. Jess Hanson Votes For, House Passes the PRO Act, Protecting Minnesotans’ Reproductive Freedom

Friday, January 20, 2023

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Yesterday, the Minnesota House passed the Protecting Reproductive Options (PRO) Act. The bill enshrines Minnesotans’ fundamental right to reproductive healthcare. Rep. Jess Hanson (DFL - Burnsville) voted for the legislation.

“I’m proud we have enshrined reproductive freedom into law for all Minnesotans and to have voted for it,” said Hanson. “Our communities told us these rights are a top priority to them, and a responsible government must keep that in mind. There is still work to do on this issue, but with this bill, we are making major strides forward to give Minnesotans control of their own health care decisions.”

The bill protects Minnesotans’ right to contraception, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, and the right to abortion, and ensures the right to privacy for personal reproductive health decisions. It also prevents interference by anti-choice politicians who seek to enact or defend medically unnecessary barriers to comprehensive reproductive health care. The Senate is still moving the bill through its committees, and Gov. Walz has signaled he will sign the bill into law.
