POCI Caucus statement on the 2nd anniversary of the killing of George Floyd

SAINT PAUL, MN - On May 25, the POCI Caucus released the following joint statement:

“Today marks the two-year traumatic anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, a Black man murdered by the very people who were sworn to protect him. A group of children and adults watched and cried out in horror while a white Minneapolis officer pressed his knee on George’s neck for nine minutes. George Floyd was a son, a brother, a father, a friend, and a partner.

“The world watched in horror the viral video footage captured by the quick thinking of a brave child. While it has been two years since the brutal murder of George Floyd the community continues to experience significant pain and trauma. We are constantly reminded of the hate, politicization, and apathy that persist and harm our community by the continued deaths of Black people and people of color at the hands of police.

“We want to send a thank you to all the community leaders, activists, mutual aid-supporters, and neighbors of George Floyd for their tireless attention to justice. For all your work and dedication, we have seen some accountability for some of the officers involved. You keep us going, and you hold each other up. Community is a beautiful thing.

“George Floyd should be alive today. That is why we are working on policies to create safer communities for everyone. Having more Black, Indigenous, Asian, and Latino members at the legislature means that these issues are confronted with the urgency and importance they require. We fully expect to see more political will from our Senate colleagues to make sure everyone in our community is truly safe.”

The House People of Color & Indigenous (POCI) Caucus includes Reps. Esther Agbaje (Chair, 59B), Jamie Becker-Finn (42B), Cedrick Frazier (45A), Aisha Gomez (62B), Hodan Hassan (62A), Kaohly Her (64A), Athena Hollins (Chair, 66B), Fue Lee (59A), Carlos Mariani (65B), Rena Moran (65A), Mohamud Noor (60B), Ruth Richardson (52B), Samantha Vang (40B), Jay Xiong (67B), Tou Xiong (53A)
