Legislative Update - The End of Session

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

On May 17, the Minnesota Legislature adjourned for the regular 2021 Legislative Session, but the work remains. As one of the only divided state legislatures in the nation, and with a large influx of federal dollars thanks to the American Rescue Plan, we reached the end of session with a bipartisan agreement on a budget framework, but not a complete budget. Now, until we reconvene for a special session in June, working groups made up of House and Senate members will hammer out the final details of our budget. I have been appointed to work with colleagues in both chambers to finalize the components of our bipartisan budget focusing on housing.

It’s important to note, especially during the first anniversary of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer, a final budget agreement is contingent on meaningful public safety reform and police accountability measures. In the past year, our community has been in the national and global spotlight, not for the things making our home a great place to live, but because of the glaring inequalities and racial disparities that exist in Minnesota. In the wake of George Floyd's murder, the Minnesota Legislature passed an initial round of new public safety laws that were always intended to be the first of many steps, and I’m confident we can come together to do more.

In the memory of George Floyd and for the promise of a better future, we’re fighting for proposals to accomplish the following:

Public Safety Reforms

American Rescue Plan

The American Rescue Plan, passed by Democrats in Congress and signed into law by President Biden, will be instrumental in not only helping us finalize our state budget, but for our community’s complete recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. I was honored to join Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to highlight the success of this new law, and its benefits for our community as well as promote the use of incoming funds to directly support underinvested communities. You can watch us speak on the American Rescue Plan below.

Northside Vaccine Clinic Fair

There are a number of places to get a COVID-19 vaccine. On Saturday, June 5, there will be a vaccine clinic fair for the Northside! Get your vaccine at North Point and join in the festivities at the Urban League from 10am – 5pm.

Vaccine Fair

Can’t make it to the fair? Minnesotans can now use the Vaccine Connector to directly schedule COVID-19 vaccine appointments at the state’s Community Vaccination Program locations, and you can visit VaccineConnector.mn.gov to directly schedule appointments at Community Vaccination locations around the state. Here is how you can get your shot:

Stay Connected

The next few weeks will be spent fighting for funding and policy that will help Minnesota bounce back from the past year and thrive. My colleagues in the House, along with Governor Walz, are pushing for the necessary investments for our state, and I was honored to join Governor Walz, Lt. Governor Flanagan, and Senator Champion in a recent tour of our community, highlighting the needs of our local businesses on Broadway Ave.
