Neighbors,

Action during the first week of session has been swift. We have an opportunity to pass meaningful legislation to move Minnesota forward and we are not sitting still. The energy around the Capitol is palpable. Here is an update:

I joined my colleagues this week by voting for the first major bill of the session. Federal tax conformity (HF 31) passed with broad, bipartisan support, and Gov. Walz signed it into law. The measure will make several changes to bring Minnesota into conformity with federal tax law, resulting in over $100 million in tax cuts to a wide range of Minnesotans, while simplifying future tax filings.

HF 4, which would allow undocumented residents of Minnesota to earn driver’s licenses, passed out of key committees this week. This measure would impact 81,000 of our undocumented immigrant neighbors and help ensure families can complete necessary daily tasks like driving to work, dropping kids off at school, or attending medical appointments. Law enforcement and the business community testified in support of the legislation. It will increase safety and justice across Minnesota by allowing these residents to complete essential errands, once they pass standard licensing exams and tests. I am a strong supporter of this measure and value the contributions and dignity of all our Mankato residents.

HF 1, the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act, has been traveling through committees this week. The bill protects Minnesotans’ right to contraception, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, the right to an abortion, and ensures the right to privacy for personal reproductive health decisions. You can read more about this bill here. This is just one of several bills I support going through the legislative process, to help ensure Minnesota remains a state where reproductive rights are protected.

There has also been action this week to advance HF 100, a bill to legalize adult cannabis use, and HF28, a bill restoring ex-offender voting rights. I support both measures and will be a ‘yes’ vote when they reach the House floor. Yesterday, HF37, a measure to prohibit discrimination based on traits associated with race, including but not limited to hair texture and hair styles, passed the House overwhelmingly.

I have also authored two local bills:

HF 145 State investments for Mankato’s regional water resource recovery facility

HF 144 State investments for the water treatment plant improvements in Eagle Lake
