Minnesota House approves legislation to support frontline workers

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Last night, the Minnesota House approved legislation to replenish the state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and deliver $1,500 bonus checks for more than 600,000 frontline workers, including health care workers, first responders, child care providers, food service and retail workers, and more. Additionally, the bill makes hourly school employees like paraprofessionals, classroom assistants, bus drivers and others eligible for unemployment benefits in the summer.

Rep. Heather Keeler (DFL - Moorhead) voted for the legislation and issued the following statement:

“So many people put themselves and their families at risk every day to keep our society going in the face of a deadly virus, before we had a vaccine,” said Rep. Heather Keeler. “These workers deserve what we promised, a bit of extra support for their sacrifice. I’m also ecstatic that, for the first time ever, our hourly school workers are able to benefit from unemployment. Our workers in Minnesota need to see swift action from Senate leaders now.”
