POCI Caucus Statement on the Verdict of the Kim Potter Trial

Thursday, December 23, 2021

St. Paul, Minnesota — On December 23rd, the jury reached a guilty verdict on both charges in the case of Kim Potter. The DFL POCI (People of Color and Indigenous) Caucus and POCI Chair Hodan Hassan (62A) released the following statement:

POCI Caucus: “As this traumatic hearing comes to an end, our community can begin the healing process. We are grateful for the work of community organizers, local leaders, and non-partisan government employees in this incredibly difficult process. We are also grateful for the jury and the service they provided in reaching a guilty verdict after much careful and thoughtful deliberation regarding Daunte’s tragic death on April 11th, 2021.

We hope that this is a step in the right direction, bringing police accountability and the safety of black lives forward as a value that we all share as the people of Minnesota. However, this change comes too slowly, while the pain our neighbors have endured in losing a beloved father, son, and brother to avoidable violence is ever-present. Our thoughts are with the Wright family today, and every day as we continue our work to end police brutality. Today’s verdict is just a step towards accountability for the loss of Daunte Wright. We will continue to fight for a just society where our public safety system values the sanctity of all life.”

Chair Hassan: “While we cannot wipe away the pain of Duante Wright’s mother, we can ensure our law enforcement are held accountable when they misuse or abuse the power we entrusted them with.”
