Legislative Update

Friday, February 21, 2020

Rep. Hassan

Neighbors,

The excitement of the first few days of session are a reminder what an honor it is to advocate for policies to improve Minnesotans' lives and to be your voice at the Capitol. The legislative session began last week and we've picked up where we left off in the challenge of passing a bold, progressive agenda with a Republican-led Senate. Some of the highlights of our agenda:

  • Provide emergency insulin access and reduce the price of prescription drugs
  • Eliminate education opportunity gaps and invest in early childhood education
  • Provide paid family & medical leave and earned safe & sick time to all Minnesotans
  • Deliver investments in communities across the state through local jobs & projects
  • And our new Climate Action Caucus is working on a plan to improve our clean energy economy and protect our natural resources

Closing opportunity gaps

I am working with our People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus on a comprehensive agenda to close opportunity gaps in education, address disparities in health outcomes, provide equal access to safe and affordable housing, promote jobs and economic development for all Minnesotans, and ensure a representative democracy by eliminating ballot box barriers. We will announce our full agenda at a press conference next week.

Great Start for All Minnesota Children Act

Minnesotans are facing two crises: education opportunity gaps and inaccessible and unaffordable child care. We kicked off the 2020 legislative session with a proposal to invest $500 million in early care and learning targeted at Minnesotans from birth to age three. I’m committed to investments in early care and learning to support families and close education opportunity gaps -- because I believe all children deserve a great start in life. Children, parents, and childcare providers all stand to benefit from our proposal. You can read more from the Associated Press.
