Legislative Update - March 6, 2019

Wednesday, March 6, 2019

Dear neighbors,

I was proud to stand with Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan on Monday as they announced their plan to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2050 and am honored to carry the bill in the House. It’s time for Minnesota to take the lead on addressing climate change!

The hard workers who will build our clean energy future were included in the press conference. Renewable energy will create tens of thousands of good Minnesota jobs.

Ensuring a Strong Count in the 2020 Census

We’re right on the bubble for keeping Minnesota’s 8th Congressional seat. A strong count in the 2020 census could mean the difference between keeping it or losing the seat to California or Montana. That’s why I introduced bipartisan legislation (HF 1644) to make sure we get a complete count.

This MinnPost article has more information about the importance of the upcoming census and how my proposal would ensure a complete count.

Gun Violence Prevention

Last week we had one of the most important public hearings of the session. The other members of the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee and I heard and passed two gun violence prevention bills. One (HF 8) would require universal background checks for gun sales. The other (HF 9) would establish red flag laws, measures that allow law enforcement and family members to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. Watch the public hearing here.

It’s clear that this issue is very important to our community. Stephen Venable, one of the 61B residents leading the way, wrote this opinion piece sharing his story and urging legislators to support both bills. Lots of other constituents have advocated for change in their neighborhoods and at the Capitol. Many thanks to all of you who pushed so hard to make this first step happen.

Minnesota Values Podcast

Check out episode three of the Minnesota Values Podcast. My co-host Rep. Olson and I are talking gun violence prevention with Rep. Dave Pinto and Rep. Ruth Richardson! Tune in and subscribe here.

Kids at the Capitol

It was great to meet with the Southwest High Ultraviolet Robotics Team (and “Rampy”) to talk about the importance of STEM education.

We’ve had several late nights recently, and sometimes that means a kid’s night at the Capitol! The little ones had a great time with my awesome colleagues on Monday.

Please continue to reach out with your questions and feedback. I always appreciate hearing from constituents!

Sincerely,

Jamie
