Governor Walz has called a special session for Monday, July 13. Among the issues to be discussed include the governor’s ongoing emergency powers, and COVID-related matters. My priorities include passage of the PROMISE Act to rebuild after the civil unrest and passing police accountability measures.
My legislative colleagues and I are determined to continue the fight for racial justice and to pass measures that ensure we are all treated equally under the law.
Addressing structural racism
Earlier this week, several People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus colleagues and I joined U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar for a news conference to highlight work being done at the state and federal level to address structural racism. We highlighted legislation to address racism in policing and criminal justice reform in Minnesota and nationwide.
Funding for cultural malls
This week, Gov. Walz, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan visited the Village Market to highlight a $2.5 million program to support cultural malls impacted by COVID-19. We met with several business owners who have been impacted by COVID-19 and the civil unrest. Last month, Gov. Walz signed the funding into law on as part of a $62.5 million package to support small businesses. You can listen to my remarks here.
E-Updates will temporarily end soon
During an election period, legislators cannot use state resources for unsolicited communications because it might create an unfair advantage. While these updates will come to an end temporarily, you can still follow me on my legislative Facebook page. I am still available to help with the state-level problems and discuss issues important to our community, so continue to reach out with any input, ideas. I value hearing from you, so please don’t hesitate to call or email me any time. It’s an honor to represent you at the State Capitol.
