Legislative Update: First Day of Session!

Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Rep. Noor

Neighbors,

The legislature heads back to the Capitol today, and House DFLers remain committed to an agenda that benefits all of us. We believe that all Minnesotans deserve a world-class education, access to affordable, quality health care, economic security, and safe and inclusive communities.

Here's a good rundown of the major issues this session from the Star Tribune.

We're also excited to welcome Sydney Jordan, a new member of the House who will take over the seat of Diane Loeffler, who passed away late last year. Rep. Jordan, Sen. Kari Dziedzic, and I will host a town hall meeting this Saturday at 3pm at Van Cleve Park to go over our priorities for 2020 and answer any questions you may have. More details are available on our Facebook event here

The first day of session is a great time to remind friends, family, or coworkers interested in the legislature to sign up for my periodic email updates from the Capitol - they can sign up here, or follow along on my House Facebook page here

Another great resource is the nonpartisan House Public Information Services Office for staying updated on committee schedules, a bill’s status, or watching live coverage of Floor Sessions or committee hearings. You can sign up to receive nonpartisan news about the Legislature here. Give them a ‘like’ or a ‘follow’ on their Facebook and Twitter pages for quick snippets and real-time updates.

This week we're hitting the ground running on my bill to require sprinklers in nearly all high rise buildings, in response to the fatal fire in the Cedar Apartments over Thanksgiving last year. The Public Safety Committee will hear the bill on Thursday, and in case you missed it, we held a press conference last week to discuss it. Here is some coverage from our press conference:

  • Insight News: Legislators call for sprinklers in high-rise buildings
  • Minnesota Daily: Following Cedar-Riverside fire, state lawmakers introduce high-rise sprinkler bill
  • KSTP: Plan requiring automatic sprinkler systems in all Minnesota high-rise buildings unveiled
  • Star Tribune: Minnesota DFL lawmakers push for requiring sprinklers in high-rises

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be your state legislator - I can't wait to get to work on legislation for our community! Keep in touch, and we hope to see you on Saturday.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mohamud Noor
