Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a nice weekend and enjoyed the milder temperatures.

We’re kicking off week 3 at the legislature with a whirlwind of activity and progress in both chambers of our unified government.

Here’s an update from the House:

Simplifying Tax Filing; $100 million in Cuts for Individuals and Businesses

On Friday last week, Governor Walz signed into law our first piece of major legislation. The legislature passed the bill unanimously and quickly so the Minnesota Department of Revenue can reduce the administrative burden on individuals and businesses this tax season. The changes we incorporated into Minnesota state law will provide $100 million in tax cuts for folks who utilized federal aid during the onset and height of the COVID-19 pandemic. One notable provision in the bill ensures that forgiven student loans are not taxed as income for Minnesotans who qualify for the federal student loan forgiveness program.

Getting this bill passed brings up a broader discussion about taxes in general. There are a lot of ideas out there and we will take a hard look at all of them. You can read more nonpartisan coverage of the new law from the House Public Information Services’ Session Daily article here

More Tools to Address Violent Crime in Minnesota

Today, my bill cleared its first hurdle in the State and Local Government Finance and Policy Committee. I’m carrying HF 29, legislation to offer expanded legal services to Minnesota counties, which will ensure more swift criminal prosecution from experienced prosecutors.

I am hearing loud and clear from our neighbors and Minnesotans across the state; addressing crime is a concern, and everyone deserves to be safe, no matter where you live. The bill’s next stop is Ways and Means before a full House Floor vote in the coming weeks.

 Coffee with John Reminder

This Saturday at 9:00 a.m., January 21, I’ll be hosting an informal ‘Coffee with John’ gathering at Morning Glory’s Café Bakery for neighbors in Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eagan. Feel free to check out the Facebook event and share with others in our community who might also be interested.
