Legislative Update- May 1, 2020

Friday, May 1, 2020

Rep. Huot

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you and yours well.

This week, Governor Walz announced an extension of the Stay at Home order, asking Minnesotans to limit movements outside of their home until May 18. Additionally, starting on Monday, retail businesses and other non-critical businesses may begin offering curbside pick-up and delivery. The Governor is also encouraging Minnesotans to use a mask when they can when out of the house.

Extended Order

We’ve done a tremendous job slowing the spread of the virus to buy our health care workers more time to test and contain confirmed cases of COVID-19, however we must move forward cautiously. Reliable statistics and data grounded in science demonstrates the pandemic is far from over- and while we are all anxious to reopen society, the process must be gradual, thoughtful, and safe. I found the Governor’s road map visual helpful in how he envisions this to happen.

House Plan to Protect Minnesotans’ Economic Security

This week, the House outlined our economic security plan to assist Minnesotans during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The key priorities we are focused on are: housing assistance for renters and homeowners; ensuring full pay for hourly school workers; enacting a well-deserved and overdue raise for personal care assistants who care for vulnerable Minnesotans; improving access to broadband internet; and making modest investments in low-income working Minnesotans to the Minnesota Family Investment Program.

Free Notary Services

As a reminder, if you’re in need of a notary, please contact me via email and I am happy to assist. I recently helped an Augustana Care resident using social distancing guidelines and practical precautions, and working with the facility staff, was able to safely provide the service to her.

Rosemount Receives DEED Grant

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) awarded nearly $3.8 million to redevelop 10 sites in eight different cities throughout Minnesota. I’m glad to share that one of these projects is in Rosemount, which has been awarded $519,821 in Redevelopment Grant funds for demolition and infrastructure improvements to the 2.66 acre Morrison site.

The site currently houses a 1960s mall and a bar/restaurant and will be redeveloped into a four-story, 124-unit market-rate apartment complex. The project is anticipated to create new jobs and increase the tax base by $245,554. Matching funds will be paid by the developer and other potential grant sources.

Local Census Update

Here’s an update on our communities’ Census self-response rates:

Coates: 57.5%

Rosemount: 78.1%

Apple Valley: 74.3%

The state average for self-response rates in Minnesota is 66.2%. We’re still leading the nation but can do better! If you haven’t had a chance to fill out your Census form, you still can online here.
