Legislative Update- March 12, 2019

Tuesday, March 12, 2019
Dear Neighbors,
I hope you had a great weekend. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first ‘Coffee with the Council’ in Rosemount on Saturday. We had an excellent turnout before the snow flew. I appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Mayor and City Council to best address your needs at the city and state level.
Here’s an update from the Capitol:

House Approves Veterans Suicide Awareness Day

Many of our veterans face challenges upon returning home from active duty. Whether it be trauma, substance abuse, or a mental health issue, too often these go unaddressed. As a result, veterans are one-and-a-half times more likely to die by suicide than civilians.
This week, I was honored to support legislation that would designate the first Saturday of October as Veterans Suicide Awareness Day. Bringing awareness to this serious issue is the first step to help prevent more deaths from occurring. You can read more about the bill here.

EMS Bills Advance

Two bills I’ve authored related to emergency medical services received public hearings in the Health and Human Services Finance Division. Both make improvements and enhancements to regional EMS programs, in addition to advanced life support educational programs. The goal is to arm our pre-hospital care providers with more tools to help save more lives. I’m pleased to share that both are being considered for a broader Health and Human Services bill.

Capitol Visitors

I recently met with school counselors from School District 196 advocating for more student mental health resources. All our kids deserve to be safe and have access to these critical resources while they are learning and growing. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication for our students.
