Legislative Update- March 6, 2019

Wednesday, March 6, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

The first two months at the Capitol have flown past. We have started passing bills out of committee and are taking some votes on the House floor.

I’m advocating for good policy on behalf of all Minnesotans and am enjoying meeting with constituents visiting the Capitol. Thank you to those who have stopped by.
It was great meeting with Future Farmers of America (FFA) students recently. I’m sponsoring their bill to deliver more funding for the Minnesota school program.
Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Tax Credit for Volunteer Firefighters, EMTs and Ambulance Workers

Yesterday I introduced legislation to provide a $500 tax credit to eligible volunteer firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and ambulance service workers. These public safety officials work on a volunteer basis and put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. They deserve economic security for their families as they carry out this public service, in addition to working their other full time jobs.

Legal Resources for Sexual Assault Victims

The Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee held a public hearing on my bill, which would require postsecondary institutions to notify victims of sexual assault that legal advocacy services are available to students. Minnesotans deserve to be safe on college campuses, and have access to the information they need immediately following an assault. The bill is being considered for inclusion to a larger higher education bill.

Improved Access to School Counselors

I also had a bill recently heard in the Education Finance Division that would increase mental health support for our students. You can read more from the nonpartisan office of House Public Information here.

Coffee with the Council

This Saturday I hope you’ll be able to join Senator Clausen and I for ‘Coffee with the Council’ in Rosemount. We will be hosting a casual conversation with Mayor Droste, and Rosemount councilmembers to listen to your concerns and ideas in how we can move our community and state forward in partnership with one another. Here are the details:

  •  Saturday, March 9 at 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Robert Trail Library, 14395 South Robert Trail, Rosemount, MN 55068

Keep in Touch

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments, or to let me know if I can be of any assistance. I appreciate your feedback.

Have a great rest of the week!

Sincerely,
John
