Upcoming Coffee Hour, Climate & Cannabis Update

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

Rep. Bierman

Dear Neighbors,

This Saturday, I’ll be hosting a community coffee hour at the Apple Valley Dunn Bros on Galaxie Ave. from 9:00-10:30 a.m. The format is casual, so anyone is welcome to grab a cup of coffee and come and go as they please. As we gear up from the 2020 session in February, I'd particularly love to hear your thoughts on your top priorities or ideas for our community.

Climate Action Caucus Update

The newly formed Climate Action Caucus has met twice this fall so legislators, experts, and residents can share ideas and discuss potential solutions to combat climate change.

The first community conversation was dedicated to transportation because it’s the largest source of Minnesota’s greenhouse gas emissions. There was a great discussion about this with several experts and the Minnesotans who joined us. Some of the potential solutions we discussed were expanding public transportation, supporting electric vehicles, and promoting biofuels.

Our latest conversation was about housing issues. We had a fascinating discussion about creating new opportunities for homeowners and renters to conserve energy. We also talked about making homes as energy efficient as possible, updating existing buildings, and supporting affordable housing. Our next community conversation is dedicated to public health. You can find more details and sign up for updates here. Helpful tips for making your home more energy efficient are available here.

Be Heard on Cannabis

Eleven states and Washington D.C. have legalized cannabis for adult use. House Majority Leader Winkler and several of my colleagues have been working on laying the groundwork for a safe, responsible and unique framework for adult-use cannabis legalization that’s responsive to Minnesota’s needs and concerns.

Many argue that legalizing cannabis for responsible adult use will expand access and affordability for people who rely on it to treat PTSD or chronic pain, allow law enforcement to focus their resources on more dangerous crimes, and expand personal freedom for Minnesotans, including the thousands of minor offenders who have been swept up in our criminal justice system. I am carefully considering all data, models, and concerns of Minnesotans, which is why I’d love to get your feedback. Take a short survey to share your thoughts and sign up for updates on future informational events here.
