Legislative Update- May 9, 2019

Thursday, May 9, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

There are just two weeks remaining in the legislative session. The Minnesota House has wrapped up our work assembling our proposals for each area of the state budget. Now, joint House/Senate conference committees are charged with determining differences in each chamber’s version of the budget and ultimately, reaching a compromise.

Here’s an update on the Education Budget that is being discussed this week in Conference Committee:

Education

Our Education budget includes investments to support our students inside and outside the classroom. We know when the experts in the schools - teachers, counselors, nurses, social workers and support staff - have sufficient resources our children and families will succeed. This budget ensures that students, families and communities across the state have access to resources such as mental health, housing and the community services needed to be successful in school. Here’s how the House and Senate education funding proposals compare:
As you can see, the House delivers substantially more for ISD #196 than the Senate. This is necessary funding that will prevent teacher and staff layoffs, larger class sizes, and will address special education funding shortfalls.

The Senate GOP’s education budget barely makes a dent in addressing larger class sizes, special education underfunding, and teacher layoffs with their 0.5% increases over the next two years. All of our kids deserve a world-class education and inaction now will inevitably lead to devastating cuts that hurt future opportunities.

I have been closely following many of the House/Senate conference committees so I can keep you updated and make sure we reach the best compromises.

Community Coffee Hour-This Saturday!

I’m hosting what will be our final coffee hour during the legislative session. All are welcome to come and go from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Dunn Brothers Coffee in Apple Valley at 15265 Galaxie Avenue. I hope you can make it to share your thoughts and questions.
