Summer Update - New Laws to Take Effect

Tuesday, June 25, 2019

Neighbors,

I hope you're enjoying the longer days and warm weather! You may have heard that some (though not all) of the legislation we passed this year will take effect on July 1st. Here's a rundown of some of the major bills taking effect at the end of the month:
  • We took on Big Pharma to hold them accountable to the opioid epidemic. The proposal that will become law on July 1st establishes a registration fee on pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors that will go toward addressing the epidemic.
  • Before the passage of the marital rape exemption, Minnesota law shielded rapists from prosecution in certain instances if they were married to their victim. The repeal of this loophole is long overdue and thanks to its bipartisan support it will take effect July 1.
  • Believe it or not, there are employers in Minnesota who steal wages by refusing overtime pay or skimming money off the top of workers' paychecks. People deserve every dollar they've earned, and our bill to crack down on wage theft will take effect at the beginning of the month.
  • Effective July 1, our schools will get a boost in funding. For schools in our district, that means an additional $7.5 million for Burnsville schools, and $7 million for Lakeville schools. We still have a long way to go to make sure our kids and teachers have the resources they need, but this is a good start.
  • Funding will also take effect for my bills to begin Metro Mobility services to Lakeville and to establish a rare disease advisory council at the U of M.
