Neighbors,

I hope you’re having a safe, snowy winter week. Thank you for electing me to be your State Representative – I can’t wait to fight for bipartisan solutions for affordable healthcare, quality education, and accessible childcare. Please keep in touch, I want to involve you in our state’s law-making process.

Committees

For the last 10 years I have been a family medicine physician. I hope to bring valuable insights as a doctor – something the Minnesota House hasn’t seen in more than 15 years – to the Health and Human Services Finance Division as vice chair of the committee. I will also serve on the Health and Human Services Policy Committee, and the Subcommittee on Elections.

Legislation

I’ve wasted no time bringing the issues of our community before the legislature, chief-authoring three important pieces of legislation. H.F. 128 would invest in workforce development in our district by providing funding for the group Lakeville Works, matching workers with local health, education, manufacturing and construction employers. H.F. 98 would help fund transportation services in Lakeville. H.F. 27 would expand eligibility for MinnesotaCare to all Minnesotans. I believe that everyone should have access to affordable care, and that no one should have to choose between their health and the ability to pay their heating bill.

Insulin

The cost of insulin is too high for too many families. In fact, over the past 14 years the average price for a vial of short-acting insulin increased 585 percent. As a doctor, I’ve seen patients who, because of prohibitive costs, have rationed their life-saving medication. That’s why I joined a bipartisan coalition of state legislators from both the House and the Senate yesterday at a press conference to outline a legislative package aimed at addressing the immorally high cost of insulin in Minnesota. Check out MPR’s coverage of the press conference here.

I am also the chief author of a bill that would increase insulin price transparency by requiring pharmaceutical companies to report the cost of prescription drugs used to treat diabetes.

Listening Sessions

I recently heard from many of you at a listening session in Burnsville and at a senior citizen housing center. I will continue to meet with and hear from you, and will update you on listening sessions as we plan them.
